Betty Carter properly called jazz “thinking music.” That doesn’t mean intellectual. But the implicit requirement to condense jazz history, harmonic theory, melodic ideas, pulse, rhythmic interest, zest, originality, authenticity and taste all in the moment, she said, means you’ve got to be a thinker. Three sublime, swinging exemplars of thinking music compose this trio of Aaron Goldberg’s.

Aaron Goldberg worked with Betty from 1992 until her death in 1998. He has spent the last 20+ years collaborating with A-listers like Nicholas Payton, Al Foster, Freddie Hubbard, Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Guillermo Klein. He’s recorded 5 celebrated trio albums as leader with Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland. Nate Chinen calls him simply “a post-bop pianist of exemplary taste and range.” ...
