Alfredo Rodriguez was born in Havana, Cuba as the son of a popular singer, television presenter and entertainer of the same name. He began his formal music education at seven. He entered the world of jazz and improvisation at 15 when an uncle gave him Keith Jarrett’s “The Köln Concert”“.

“Until then it had been all Bach, Mozart and Beethoven,” Rodriguez said. “I didn’t know anything about improvisation and “The Köln Concert” changed my life.”

Since he started his professional career he searched different styles and different rhythms of Cuban music. He explored Conga Santiaguera [a rhythm from Santiago, in Eastern Cuba], Afro-Cuban music, and also Música Guajira [country music]. Rodriguez continues to explore the roots and is searching for his own contribution to Cuban music. He also embraces the music of the Yoruba-rooted, Afro-Cuban religion, better known in the U.S. as Santería....
